The October 15 Event: Sustainable South Africa – Wines of South Africa (WOSA) trade show portion

The Date and Time: Tuesday, October 15, 2019  11:30AM - 4PM
The Event: Sustainable South Africa – Wines of South Africa (WOSA) trade show portion
The Venue: Steamwhistle Brewery, Roundhouse Hall
The Target Audience: wine trade
The Availability/Catalogue: the show was in both Toronto and Montreal, and not all wines were at both places. The catalogue noted the wines and the vintages, but not all the wines had arrived. Prices (if available) had to be obtained at the tables.
The Quote/Background: The seminar at 11:30 was led by John Szabo, and was about the sustainability of the WOSA wineries. My ratings on these wines are folded into the notes below.
The Wines: There were 30 wineries, I did not taste them all nor all of the other wines. This time I tried mainly the whites, following on the lead of the seminar which had only two reds.

NEW BEVERAGE SAMPLES SENT TO ME FOR TASTING –

NEW BEVERAGE SAMPLES SENT TO ME FOR TASTING  –

1.Gerard Bertrand Terroir Languedoc Red 2015 +413237 October Vintages, $16.95: the last vintage here was 2013. This is a re-order of the 2015: it's a blend of syrah and grenache, promising both black fruit and red fruit tones at an affordable price. Local garrigue is apparent, complemented by some fennel. Part of the wine is transferred over to 225-litre oak barrels where it is aged for roughly 10 months. 14% ABV. Good price. Quality/Price rating is 89 points by Dean Tudor of Gothic Epicures.

2.Henry of Pelham Riesling Estate 2018 VQA Short Hills Bench, +557165 Vintages, $19.95: intense riesling in a Rhine style of cool fermentation, with very off-dry palate but dry finish (good acid levels on the finish) – broad grapefruit and lemons on the mid-palate, sip (mainly) or food. 10.5% ABV, 17g/L RS, twist top, from HOP's oldest Estate vineyards (33+ year old riesling vines). Should also age well. Try with fish that live in water but die in wine. Quality/Price rating is 91 points by Dean Tudor of Gothic Epicures.

3.Henry of Pelham Pinot Noir Speck Family Reserve 2017 VQA Short Hills Bench, +657874 Vintages November, $34.95: this is an LCBO re-order of a top of the line pinot noir from Ontario, fruit-forward with enough black/dark tones of cherry-berry capable of long cellar aging. The winery says Clones 667 on Block 100 were used for 250 cases. Tank fermentation with 10 months small European oak barrel aging, finishing as blended in an oak tank. Very, very food friendly. 13.5% ABV. Quality/Price rating is 91 points by Dean Tudor of Gothic Epicures.

4.Cantina Valpantena Veneto Chardonnay IGP 2017 $13.95 Consignment Majestic Wine Cellars:  It's a definite antipasto or pre-prandial wine since it was light lemons with lively acidity, some tart apples, 12% ABV, and a longer finish than I was expecting. Quite pleasant. Under composition cork. Quality/Price rating is 88 points by Dean Tudor of Gothic Epicures.

5.Albino Armani 1607 Chardonnay Capitel 2017 Trentino DOC, $19.95 consignment Majestic Wine Cellars. From the Adige Valley region, it's a mellow, rounder wine with less acid (sweet apples) but a long honeyed finish in the mouth. Composition cork, and it too had sweet apples, limes and citrus, and a bright freshness from the stainless steel. 12.5% ABV. Quality/Price rating is 89 points by Dean Tudor of Gothic Epicures.

6.Biscardo Oropasso Originale 2018 IGT Veneto $17.95 consignment from Majestic Wine Cellars: made from 60% garganega (basis of soave) and 40% chardonnay juice. No oak, just stainless steel for freshness. But a longer fermentation than usual, and five months on the lees. Results? An engaging floral, off-sweet bouquet leading to nuts and tropical fruits on the palate with citrus running in the background. A good seam of acidity through to the spicy finish. Best with food, but possible also as a sipper. A very nice riff on Soave. The company's series includes Rosapasso (pinot noir rose) and Neropasso (red), all trading off on the "oro-" gold usage. 13% ABV. Good value. Quality/Price rating is 90 points by Dean Tudor of Gothic Epicures.

7.Morgan Bay Cellars Chardonnay 2017 California appellation $17.95 Majestic Wine Cellars Consignment:  cork disc closure, well-rounded texture meant to appeal to the US palate. There were lemons and green apples, but also the softness and taste of a creamy caramel. But there is also enough finishing acid for a first course. Otherwise, sip away. 13% ABV. Quality/Price rating is 90 points by Dean Tudor of Gothic Epicures.

8.Rutherford Ranch Chardonnay 2016 Napa $25.95, Consignment from Majestic Wine Cellars: a soft wine full of orchard fruit (baked apple, pear), creamy, bright, some vanilla but a little toasted French oak (and lees) with spices. Aperitif or with seafood. 13.5% ABV. RS a meagre 0.1 g/L. Quality/Price rating is 91 points by Dean Tudor of Gothic Epicures.

10.Jim Barry The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 Coonawarra Terra Rossa South Australia, $19.95 +677476 Vintages October: it's been awhile since I've had an affordable dense cabby from Oz (since the days of Hill Smith?). This one's loaded with juicy cassis and black cherry notes. Some Bordeaux-like tones come into play (leafy tobacco, cedar box, anise, some herbaceousness. Near the finish there is a softness that may seem out-of-place, but the wine is now almost four years old. Coonawarra produces only 1.5% of Australian wine; the exceptional Terra Rossa section is but a small part of this tiny percentage. A winner all round. 14.3% ABV. Quality/Price rating is 91 points by Dean Tudor of Gothic Epicures.

11&12.Chateau des Charmes Atelier White 2017 VQA NOTL $14.95 LCBO +688499, and
Chateau des Charmes Atelier Red 2017 VQA NOTL $14.95 LCBO +688523, both also at winery and online: these two wines represent the latest blended wines from Chateau des Charmes
as Generation Seven Red and White came a decade ago. The white is unusual in that it's an Ontario version of the Alsatian Edelzwicker, with its Riesling-Gewurztraminer-Auxerrois blend of noble varieties. 1800 cases of social wine (parties, pre-prandials, first course food accompaniments) in the mainly popular riesling-gewurz style favoured by a lot of wineries world-wide. The red, to continue a French analogy, is Burgundy meets Bordeaux, with five different grapes: Gamay noir-Pinot noir-Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon-Cabernet Franc. 4000 cases of social wine or first course food accompaniments. Both wines are produced from the Chateau's own estates, and are light-bodied (no oak) and fruity (floral in the white, berries in the red), to accompany friends or simple foods as a social wine. 12% ABV for both. Both are also part of the Limited Time Offers running from the Sept 16 through Oct 13 period, reducing the price to $13.95 apiece. Quality/Price rating of both is 88 points by Dean Tudor of Gothic Epicures.

13&14.Toro Bravo Tempranillo Merlot 2018 Valencia, $7.95 LCBO +635755, and Toro Bravo Verdejo Sauvignon Blanc 2018 La Mancha, $7.95 LCBO +10711: these are not the cheapest wines at the LCBO but they do appear to be the most reasonable. The trend in lower-end pricing or entry wines has always been to the bi-varietal spectrum, such as most of the wines from Latin America, especially the ones in magnums. This works in Europe too. Here we have a Tempranillo and Merlot mix from Valencia, where the blend neatly plays down any shortcomings and plumps up the softness and rich readiness of the lowered tannin finish. Fruity, best suited to red wine drinkers on the patio who like just red wine without any food. Sip or quaff. 13% ABV. The white (Verdejo Sauvignon Blanc) to my mind tastes better: more citrus and orchard stone fruit. It is nicely blended and can serve as a patio wine or aperitif or first course wine with light food, showing off a light minerality. 11.5% ABV. Both have a twist top, of course, and both are value wines. Quality/Price rating of the red Toro Bravo is 87 points by Dean Tudor of Gothic Epicures. Quality/Price rating of the white Toro Bravo is 89 points by Dean Tudor of Gothic Epicures.

Devour, Wolfville, NS

Devour, Wolfville, NS, by Ann Tudor

We just arrived back in Toronto after spending a week in beautiful Wolfville, Nova Scotia. The occasion of the trip was Devour, the Food Film Festival, a five-day extravaganza of eighty films, plus three large dinners, prepared by chefs from Canada, the U.S., and Europe. Culinary workshops were taught by well-known chefs and there were also workshops on film-making, foraging, wine-tasting, and cheese-tasting—as well as trips to wineries and breweries.

My reason for writing about the festival here (aside from the hope that some of you might be inspired to attend Devour next year) is to tell you about a few of the movies that inspired me.

Two movies ("Dive" and "The Food Fighter") deal with the question of food waste, showcasing people who work tirelessly to inform us and to persuade (for example) large grocery chains to send their perfectly good packaged products to soup kitchens rather than to the dumpsters behind their stores. Very inspiring stories.

"Billion Dollar Bully" investigates the accusations that Yelp! is running a mob-like extortion scheme.

"The Game Changers" views plant-based eating not just as the best choice environmentally but as a way for athletes to achieve their best results. Fascinating and very persuasive.

Finally, "Maxima" and "Honeyland" are portraits of very strong women thriving in harrowing circumstances. Maxima lives in mountainous Peru, where her small piece of land is coveted by a giant gold-mining company. "Honeyland", set in rural Macedonia, follows the life of a woman who uses ancient traditions in the keeping of her bees.

All of these movies are well worth your time. "The Game Changers" is already on Netflix, so it's easy to find. I urge you to watch for the others during the next year, whether on-line or at your local theatre.

And do go to www.devourfest.com to learn more about the festival, which will celebrate its tenth anniversary next year.

The Event: A tasting of Fortified Wines as developed by the Wine Writers' Circle of Canada (18th annual tasting)

The Date and Time: Tuesday October 8, 2019  3PM to 7PM
The Event: A tasting of Fortified Wines as developed by the Wine Writers' Circle of Canada (18th annual tasting)
The Venue: Wine Writers' Circle of Canada's clubhouse.
The Target Audience: WWCC members exclusive.
The Availability/Catalogue: All these fortified wines are at the LCBO or by consignment, etc. They include ports, sherries, vermouths, and other beverages.
The Quote/Background: This was not a competition or a judging, but a tasting for writing purposes re: Holiday Wines and Gifts. The Wine Writers' Circle of Canada would like to thank each of the supplying agents for their contributions.
The Wines: My ratings do NOT include a ranking beyond GOOD, BETTER, and BEST. They are listed randomly within each category.
The Wines: Meanwhile, this just in: " Interest in sherry is drying up to the point of extinction despite concerted efforts at a revival, writes Don Kavanagh. Meanwhile, searches on Wine-Searcher for port increased 34.5% in the last five years, and searches for the most-popular port so far this year were conducted 46 times more frequently than searches for most-popular sherry, he writes."

* DRINK BOOK OF THE MONTH! Whiskey; a tasting course, by Eddie Ludlow (DK Books)

1.WHISKEY; a tasting course (DK Books, 2019, 224 pages, ISBN 978-1-4654-8239-6, $25 USD hardbound) is by Eddie Ludlow, former Brand Ambassador for Glenmorangie and now co-owner with his wife of The Whiskey Lounge, an event-centered spot for all manner of things whiskey. They believe that the best way to find out about whiskey is by tasting it, similar to the approach by wine writers. So here there are 20 tailored tasting sessions of four samples each, structured to take you through the experience of aromas and flavours, ranging from the scents of Japanese oak through to the smoky tang of Islay peat. They've got some tasting tours and insider tips on smart buying. They cover the basics on how whiskey is produced and how to taste spirits, with stops for tasting vocabulary on aromatics, body, and finish, plus deep background. They begin of course with Scottish single malts, progressing to Irish, bourbon, rye, Japanese/Asian, and the like. There are suggestions for what bottles to buy, and if you have a group, then you can easily absorb the costs. Good, strong schematic diagrams.
Audience and level of use: whiskey lovers looking for new angles, millennials.
Some interesting or unusual recipes/facts: Scotch whisky was the unwitting beneficiary of the phylloxera grapevine-destroying parasite. As stocks of grape-based alcohol ran low, sales of Scotch whisky soared.
The downside to this book: too many small generic photos take away space from the instructions.
The upside to this book: whiskey and food (including chocolate) are covered, along with cocktails.
Quality/Price Rating: 93.

The Event: Advanced Shiraz Masterclass with Nigel Westblade, chief winemaker of Peter Lehmann, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the winery.

The Date and Time:  Wednesday October 9, 2019  2PM - 4PM
The Event: Advanced Shiraz Masterclass with Nigel Westblade, chief winemaker of Peter Lehmann, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the winery.
The Venue: Independent Wine Education Guild, Toronto
The Target Audience: a full house of two dozen wine experts
The Availability/Catalogue:
The Quote/Background: Nigel spoke on the Barossa and the Shiraz grape, with reference to Peter Lehmann (repped in Ontario by Phillipe Dandurand). He describe the Barossa region (Barossa Valley and  Eden Valley) and its 17 sub-regions: the area is responsible for 43% of all Oz premium wine exports; the are has some of the oldest vines in Australia; 550 growers tend to 800 hand-picked vineyards (blocks are kept separate or blended later, depending on quality). Peter Lehmann makes dozens of different wines each year.
The Wines:  We tasted in order of price, from low to high. Only the first few are currently at the LCBO.

-Peter Lehmann The Barossan Shiraz 2017 Barossa $21.95 Vintages +522235 – in French and US oak for a year, 14.5% ABV, RS 1 h/L. Mocha tones.
-Peter Lehmann The Barossan Shiraz 2018 Barossa $21.95 Vintages TBD +522235 – in US oak, very appealing, 14.5% ABV.

-Peter Lehmann Futures Shiraz 2016 Barossa - $~35+ new and old French oak for 15 months. 14.8% ABV, RS 3.1g/L. Full flavours and nicely aged. My fave of the tasting.

Subject: * FOOD BOOK OF THE MONTH! Super Roots by Tanita de Rujit (Hardie Grant Books)

SUPER ROOTS: cooking with healing spices to boost your mood (Hardie Grant Books, 2019, 160 pages, ISBN 978-1-78488-241-9, $22.99 paperbound) is by Tanita de Ruijt, a Dutch chef at the Japanese udon-ya Koya Bar in London UK. A lot of the food here is Asiatic. There is preliminary material on “top 12 healing recipes to suit your mood”, notes on sweet and starchy, salty and umami, pungent and spicy, bitter, sour and “balanced”. There is a separate chapter on the pantry that needs to be maintained. Then it's all arranged by your mood of the moment: tired, hungover, bloated, and sick. The book could have been improved if it also used more metric in the recipes (and reduced the imperial), or at least had a metric conversion chart.

Audience and level of use: those needing a change in diets

Some interesting or unusual recipes/facts: kimchi hummus; gado gado with turmeric peanut sauce; Korean hangover soup; spring onions, herbs and turmeric pancakes; sunshine curry spinach; spice salsa verde;  urap urap coconut salad.

The downside to this book: needs more metric

The upside to this book: good idea for anybody to eat these preps.

Quality/Price Rating: 92

WORLD WINE WATCH TOP WINES AT VINTAGES: under/over $20 for OCTOBER 26, 2019

WORLD WINE WATCH TOP WINES AT VINTAGES:  under/over $20 for OCTOBER 26, 2019

By DEAN TUDOR, Gothic Epicures Writing deantudor@deantudor.com. My "Wines, Beers and Spirits of the Net", a guide to thousands of news items and RSS feeds, plus references to wines, beers and spirits, has been at http://www.deantudor.com since 1994.

These notes for good wines available through  LCBO Vintages (on a bi-weekly basis)  can always be found at http://www.gothicepicures.blogspot.ca  or at  http://www.deantudor.com

Scores are a combination of MVC (Modal Varietal Character, e.g. a Southern Rhone would taste like a Southern Rhone) and QPR (Quality/Price Ratio value in the marketplace above or below its price).

NOTE: The first portion  is based on my sampling of the table wines chosen by the LCBO from this release for tasting. That presentation is about 50+  different labels out of about 125 released every two weeks. These wines are basically those that fit the categories of  any of the Featured Themes, Wines of the Month, Local Talent, and "new" -- wines that the LCBO has ordered in sufficient quantities for the Ontario marketplace. Not put out for us are the re-orders (even though they may be of a different vintage) , ISDs, or the expensive wines.  Thus, my report comes from a restricted database. I did not taste every one of these 50+ category wines, nor did I rate several of the wines I did sample because they did not seem to be of particularly good value in terms of their price.

NOTE: The second part (at the end) is a simple listing of  those wines that were NOT presented to the media, and are given here simply as a record of  what sampling I could not do. I have left in the name of the agency, in fairness to all.

The Upside: a chance to talk with the winemaker, Marc Kent

The October 7 Event: Rogers & Company Portfolio Trade Tasting

The Date and Time:  Monday October 7, 2019  1:30 PM to 8PM
The Event: Rogers & Company Portfolio Trade Tasting
The Venue: George
The Target Audience: wine trade sommeliers and media
The Availability/Catalogue: New wineries this year include Tenuta Cocci Grifoni (Le Marche), Vignerons de Bel Air (Burgundy), and Tenute Falezza (Valpolicella). The catalogue was re-sorted this year by winery in alphabetical order, for the most part.
The Quote/Background: The catalogue had much info about each wine, including wine press  scores, size and number of wines per case, and space for notes.
The Wines: I did not taste every wine, preferring to be eclectic. Prices include HST but not bottle deposits.
